The Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith was the first post-war model for the brand and was slated to serve only the top members of society. Royalty, heads of state, and international presidents were among the elite client lists. Buyers purchased a rolling chassis and commissioned custom coachwork to be tailored. Throughout the early 1950s hand-built coachwork became increasingly expensive, and by 1956 there were only four firms customizing bodies; Hooper & Co., Mulliner, Park Ward, and James Young.
Motorcar Gallery has the honor of representing one of the seven known Hooper & Co left-hand drive Empress models. Hooper & Co was the premier coachbuilder for the English royal family, and well respected for no expense spared projects. The Empress model has one long sweeping line from the front of the vehicle down towards the rear giving it a stately presence. Hooper & Co were known for details like hidden running boards to provide passenger usability while not detracting from the exterior bodylines. Due to Hooper & Co’s connection with the Crown the Empress sold extensively in the UK. Limited marketing to the United States market slowed the model’s momentum leaving only a handful to be produced in LHD. Making this example a rare opportunity for any collector.
Rolls Royce introduced the Silver Cloud in 1955 which brought along advancements such as a larger engine, and power steering. It was originally sold to a resident of Monte Carlo, who was said to be an erotic novelist. The vehicle stayed in the French region until 2001 when it was discovered in Paris and sold to a German collector. Upon his passing, it was put up for sale and was purchased for a significant US based Rolls Royce and Bentley collection. After its stateside arrival Doug Siebert, foremost Rolls Royce expert, completed a full service. Great care has been taken to ensure the original paint and interior have been preserved, ready for its next concours field.
